“I want to stop but I just can’t!” Does this statement reveal your innermost thought? “Action” simply implies “doing”, that is, performing or carrying out an activity. From the previous chapter, we have come to understand that sin is first a nature before it becomes an action.
Most people are fond of blaming the devil every time they disobey God (hence, committing yet another sin – lying). When asked why they do certain things, they usually say it’s “the devil’s handwork”. Though I actually agree that the devil most definitely has a part in convincing a man to disobey God but he (the devil) has no power to cause you to sin.
There is one thing I’m certain of, and it’s that sin is not a sudden action; it is the cumulative effect of yielding to the devil’s idea. It begins within a man’s heart (mind) before it is manifested as an action.
Let me share a personal experience and a testimony with you. Like I mentioned in the introduction, I once had a habit of masturbating. For me, it was simply a way of satisfying my sexual urge but before I knew it, it had become a stronghold (something that held me captive). It became an instrument the devil tried using to separate me from God. You might be thinking, is masturbating really a sin? Yes! Of course, but the devil will never tell you it is (because he is a liar, that’s what he does for a living – lying.
Frankly, when did “playing with my thing” become sinful? Well, since the days of Jesus Christ! In the book of Matthew chapter five verses twenty seven and twenty eight, Jesus told us how: “Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”
Although, we could condone this act in little children (especially in the males) that he/she innocently and curiously play with his/her sex organ, but the practice of masturbation as an alternative to pre-marital sex is as good as sleeping with that boy, girl, man or woman (on TV or in a picture) with whom you are lusting over in your heart.
In the same way just looking at a woman lustfully is regarded by Jesus as committing adultery. You have already committed the physical act of sleeping with them by masturbating. The reason why a sin at heart is as good as a sin in act, is because God looks at the heart (see 1 Samuel 6:7), and the only reason why you probably haven’t physically committed the sin is because you don’t have the “right” environment to do so.
By the way, the fact that we now know that God looks at the heart (or a man’s motive), is not a license to lie or steal in the name of “good motive”.
Sin is sin, regardless of the motive; good or bad!
Sin is a progressive act; it starts within the heart and from as simple as lying, it graduates to stealing and so on (just as masturbation almost graduated into homosexuality for me). Sin has a hunger for more sin.
